Blog # 7 Advertising Strategy

I was not surprised that a majority of Trump’s campaign Ads had some aspect of an attack ad. The three out of four ads I analyzed either directly or indirectly attacked Hilary Clinton. The last ad and the only one I found that did not use scare tactics was the least effective in my opinion. In a way I feel that Trump played very dirty when it came to slandering his opponents but I feel that it ended up working in his favor.

#1 Laura

If you chose to watch any of the ads on this page I suggest it be the one below. This ad is very powerful in my opinion. The ad shows a distraught mom talking about her son who was brutally murdered by none other than an illegal immigrant. The mom goes into detail and says that she believed if immigration policies were more strict her son may still be alive. The mom then continues to say that if Hilary Clinton is voted into office than other attacks like this will continue. This ad does a few things for a few different groups of people:
Moms- I think most Moms would list their child’s safety as a top priority. This ad targets mothers and women almost threatening them that if Hilary is elected than it is possible that a brutal attack is possible for your child as well. This is utilizing scare tactics for mothers to follow Trump for protection from atrocities such as the mother in the ad experienced. I also wanted to point out that this is the only ad that appeals to women. However, the ad doesn’t focus on women as individuals but only as women as mothers. I thought this was interesting and possibly a weak spot in Trumps marketing.

 #2 Predators

The second TV ad I found was also an attack ad but this one was undoubtedly a direct attack on Hilary Clinton. This ad identifies Hilary Clinton’s supporters and attempts to personally state why each group should really be against Clinton. This ad is not discrete it is obvious what it is attempting to do but I feel it is pretty effective. For each of the following groups the ad says:
African America Youth- The ad shows a clip referring to them as “ super predators, no conscious no empathy”
Millennial Supporters- “ They are all living in their parents’ basements”
Trump Supporters- Of course the “Basket of deplorables” comment.

#3 Dangerous

This ad is directed towards older voters who have experienced war in their lifetime. Yet again, this ad is an attack ad but mainly uses scare tactics to get its point across. This ad shows disturbing images of war and other nations attacking the US. This ad was terrifying to me so I would imagine the older generation who has experienced war on a first hand experience would be very alarmed by this message. The ad is ultimately suggesting that Hilary is not capable of protecting the US for foreign entities.

#4 Consumer Benefit

To finish this analysis I decided to end on a positive note. This ad only speaks about Donald Trump and uses positive language to show American voters how Trump plans in order to make America great again. These perks include tax deductions, paid maternity leave, childcare tax deduction and job creation.

  1. I agree that the majority of his advertisements were attacks on his opponent. Whether they were blatant or not, almost everyone had a reference of some sort towards Hillary. That being said, I never saw the last ad you chose and I think that was one of the only Trump ads that had its main focus on his policy, in addition to how it would affect citizens. Also, despite all his absurdity, you did a great job finding a positive ad and ending it on a good note!

  2. His Laura ad was one of the most effective ads he put out during the election. It really made viewers sympathize with the victim’s mother, all the while promoting Trump as the guy who will protect our borders. The only problem with this ad is that he basically puts this devastating attack on Clinton. Clinton had nothing to do with this attack and its disappointing that he would connect the two. Also, Trump is an entertainer, so it is no surprise that a lot of his ads are very dramatic and attention grabbing.

  3. Megan,
The first video you posted, the Laura ad was a great ad to talk about. There are many mothers out there in this country who are concerned about the future and want to make sure their kids are as safe as possible. Many mothers also keep an eye out for politics, and watch the news daily. The woman vote was a vote that Trump needed, and he got it. Many people don't know this, but Donald Trump performed better in the woman's vote then Mitt Romney did in 2012. The percentage of Females voting for Trump in 2016 is higher than the percentage of females that voted Romney in 2012. Overall, you chose wonderful ads to talk about and it was a well written blog.
